Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated was founded November 12, 1922 at Butler University, in Indianapolis, Indiana. The founders were seven young school teachers, Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian White Marbury, Bessie M. Martin, Hattie Mae Dulin Redford, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, and Cubena McClure, who spent the first three years of Sigma's existence organizing.

The Founders of Sigma Gamma Rho sought to create an organization which offered teachers an opportunity to fellowship and gave professional growth through networking. They dreamed of a legacy which promoted the ideas of greater service and achievement through higher education. Over seventy years later, Sigma Gamma Rho has grown to include women of all races and vocations numbering 72,000.

Activities are encouraged that will further in every way possible, the advantages of members socially, morally and intellectually. To this end, the membership assumes the responsibility to: provide an atmosphere in which friendships and social contacts may be developed: assist each member in developing social graces by emphasizing the value of poise and personal dignity: encourage and promote high scholastic attainment; develop leadership abilities and individual talents: and maintain interests and attitudes in harmony with modern thought and changing educational outlook.

Sigma Gamma Rho affiliates include Rhoers, who are high school students and Philos who are adult women who do not hold degrees. The official publication is the Aurora Magazine. Our history books are Behind These Doors - A Legacy: The History of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority and The Legacy Continues...The History of Sigma Gamma Rho 1974-1994.

Sigma Gamma Rho was incorporated in 1929. Today more than 400 undergraduate and graduate chapters have been established around the United States, Bermuda, the Virgin Islands and the Bahamas. Sigma Gamma Rho remains a strong sisterhood of educated women, whose members strive for "Greater Service, Greater Progress" the slogan by which each and every member lives. The Sorority colors are Royal Blue and Gold. The flower is the Yellow Tea Rose, and the French Poodle is the mascot.
